Applique is the process of stitching small pieces of fabric to a larger piece of fabric, and in the process, creating a unique design. It’s an ideal way to customize a project (like a pillowcase!) by introducing a new color, some texture, or even a touch of whimsy. To make an applique, start by drawing or printing your design on a sheet of paper and cutting it out. Then, get some iron-on adhesive and trace your design onto the paper side of it. Next, cut around the lines of your design, leaving about 1/4 inch of the iron-on paper around the edges.
